Fashion in Motion
Being a fashion and cultural journalist for a couple of years definitely convinced me that cinema, music, dance, design and the arts are infused with fashion. Many times I have identified with an era or country simply by looking at peoples’ clothes in a painting, a photo or a film.

As a Trend Director, I am an observer. I need to see people, their attitudes, the way they dress, move and talk. Sitting at the terrace of a café, at the front row of a fashion show or in a marketplace, I am always trying to detect a common denominator within this cultural human collage.

I feel so universal and so French at the same time! I find myself obsessed with the deceptively casual je ne sais quoi girls like Charlotte Gainsbourg, Lou Doillon, Anna Mouglalis, Emmanuelle Alt and Kate Moss (the British exception). Fashion speaks to me emotionally. The coming and going of style inspiration can be so overwhelming that I need to share it, whether it be Isabel Marant’s amazing collections, Joann Sfarr’s first oneiric movie about Gainsbourg, Christopher Nemeth’s deconstructed fashion, the Rough Luxe hotel in London or a Damien Hirst exhibition. I am amazed at how hard artists work to make their creation look effortless. I have had the chance to meet with designers, film directors, choreographers and writers and follow their creative process in order to see how they capture the essence of their art.

What is fascinating about fashion is that it’s constantly evolving, mirroring the signs of the times, renewing aesthetic codes. I love Roland Barthe’s saying that fashion is an extension of our personality, telling our story through our style. Fashion is becoming more interesting; everyday people have the ability to express their vision of trends on the Internet, challenging the way designers and brands conceive their collections.

They are the new influencers. I feel strongly about the deep change that these mediums are generating. Fashion is not static or restrained to a 10-minute runway show. Fashion is perpetually in motion, pioneering new paths with visionaries like Nick Knight, the first photographer who started filming clothes and shows in his SHOWStudio; Todd Selby, who enchants daily life by posting photos of inventive artists in their personal environments; and French blogger Garance Dore’s spontaneous illustrations and portraits. These are just some of my daily bread. Innovation is exciting and it compels us to look forward and break the boundaries of creativity.

As an urban-nomad-professional-traveler I find inspiration in any atmosphere, object or building. Architecture is such a powerful statement, from Art Nouveau to Le Corbusier, Jean Nouvel or Zaha Hadid’s futuristic lines, reflecting the evolution of civilizations. I am aware of the value of the present, yet I also look at the past with distinction. Composers and painters from the past are so infused with today. Pollock, Picasso, Soulages, Bacon and Basquiat have never been so contemporary. And Music! I can’t do without music. I am a Rolling Stones child mixed with film composers-meet-Beethoven and Philip Glass. Fashion wouldn’t taste the same without it. Fashion has so much to say about us!
