TrendScope
Francis Wong, VP Art Director – New York

I love the art of the snapshot. I always carry a small camera, especially when I am traveling. The smallest, ordinary things can catch my eye: a fish tank in the wet market, typography on a wall, a ragtag collection of chairs on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, layers of posters on a wall, a row of very blue sandals in a doorway in Vietnam, studies of the famous Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo.

I am fascinated by repetition, abstracted forms, shapes, lonely objects and the strong lines of architecture, nature or man-made space. I use the viewfinder of my camera for the ultimate cropping, and rarely manipulate the photos after I take them. When I have free time I group them together, creating compositions that inspire me based on the combination of the ordinary. Pattern with object, pattern on pattern, color with object, color on color – the possibilities are endless. I always find the greatest inspiration for design from looking at things I see every day in a new way.
