Zuhair Murad

FALL FROM GRACE
Paris: “Gothic Renaissance,” was Beirut-based Zuhair Murad’s credo for F/W 13, a collection that explored the tension of the “split personality: White guipure lace versus black leather; angel versus demon.” The intricate embroidery seen in Murad’s Fall 13 Couture collection carried through here, trailing down the side of a second-skin leather pencil skirt or preserving the modesty of a delicate, diaphanous lace gown. Dresses hugged close to the body, were slashed at the thigh or treated to curve-enhancing panels of lace and sheer polka dot tulle, while head-to-toe paillettes and lush jewel-tone florals inspired by 15th Century Flemish painter Jan van Eyck, punctuated the pure white against wicked black color palette. It was a dramatic dichotomy that could take one to the alter or a noir soirée with equal ease and elegance. –Natalie Shukur
