New York: For spring, Maria Cornejo did not stray far from the formula that has a garnered her a loyal group of fans over the years, most notably (as it deserves mentioning in every review) The First Lady Michelle Obama. Although sticking to her usual lineup of easy, draped pieces for the sophisticated yet unconquerably chic set, there was a perceptible lightness to her clothes this season, aided by ample shots of white and items from her new swimwear line. Prints this season were also more plentiful – some even fanciful, such as a collage of polka dots, plaid, houndstooth and hot pink ikat, which Cornejo masterfully worked to enhance the lines of her draped garments. A print of a magnified burlap also mixed in seamlessly with her designs, pieced in various directions to resemble an ethnic sari print. Her signature pegged pants appeared in abundance, the most compelling versions made from paper-thin perforated leathers and in below-the-knee lengths. Her trademark cocoon-shaped dresses also looked fresher than ever, their subtle drapery giving them a fluid, clean elegance in keeping with this season’s so-far buoyant mood.
