With elements that seemed to contradict one another – boxy structure and feminine details, slick leather and kitschy strawberry appliqués – Stefano Pilati’s collection for YSL seemed perplexing at first. However, with a subtle hand, he lent his particular sophistication to all the pieces, and that was the common thread that brought them all together. Couture-quality details like pleated swirls of fabric added a grace note to classics like a straight white vest worn with high-waisted short shorts. His always exquisite leather pieces made an appearance, this time fashioned into a chic pencil skirt embellished with matte sequins and the easy trouser that is so popular on the runways this season. Shorts that were slashed at the hem appeared in several colors and fabrics; one black pair was topped with a pristine white boxy jacket. A simple linen dress in periwinkle blue with subtle volume at the shoulder and big patch pockets was the perfect example of Pilati’s ability to transform a classic piece into something much more.
