Yves Saint Laurent

Paris: Yves Saint Laurent’s Fall collection practically embodied the word “slick.” From the leather-tipped blazers and sleek trousers to the high-collared shirts cut close to the body, designer Stefano Pilati was in a darkly sensual mood. Midway through the presentation the silhouette loosened up, easing from slim double-breasted overcoats in grey wool to boxy shearling tunics, pleated pants and crewneck intarsia knits emblazoned with razor blade graphics. Working within a basic palette of black, grey and white, Pilati included a number of surprising and innovative details, such as trompe l’oeil suspenders on knit tops, but at times the preponderance of leather became overwhelming in head-to-toe ensembles.—Nina Stotler
