World Cup Inspirations

With World Cup 2010 a mere 44 days away, the event inspired product releases continue to come fast and furious. From the sublime to the strange nearly everyone has given a nod to South Africa. Here are three recent product releases that caught our eye.

Classic Brazilian footwear maker Havaianas has released a great line of beach tongs featuring the colors of 17 World Cup nations.
Produced with typical Havaianas quality the sandals feature national colors, Champion Stars, bold numbering and a tastefully placed flag on each strap. Sadly South Africa will be in the throws of winter during June making for cold toes; but these certainly would look great on any beach.

When not fronting U2 or meeting with world leaders Bono along with wife Ali Hewson created the EDUN health and beauty line back in 2005. With its message of “trade not aid “ the company has wisely backed WC2010 as a great way to spread its ethos. EDUN has partnered with beauty giants Sephora to create two South African inspired color pallet compacts. All proceeds from sales goes towards the Wildlife Conservation Society and their Conservation Cotton initiative. The goal of the project is to help African farmers develop organic and sustainable production methods.

Y-3 has just released a wild line of World Cup inspired footwear. With looks fusing supple materials, 1950s football boots and national team colors; the results are stunning. Available in both mid and low versions; there are a total of 7 national team color schemes to chose from. In our opinion, the most interesting style from the line might be the “street cleat“ concept.

Available only on low versions the shoe features studded bottoms meant for the street. While the shoes might be too directional for general audiences, they certainly cement Y-3’s reputation of forward thinking athletic gear.
