Candles have been enjoying a good share of attention across interiors over the past few seasons, becoming a cherished gifting option for women and men, and one of the fastest growing market in recent years.
As a result of this renewed interest, candles have evolved to becoming interior design talking point. They have evolved so much past the point of simply being a quick fix for power outages. In fact the market, with its extensive range of designs and scents means that the product now falls between the beauty, wellness and interior worlds.
Although scent remains by far the leading factor in determining purchases today, the need for newness is bringing shapes to the fore, releasing candles from holders and vessels to shine in their own right.
As we highlight in new report Key Items S/S 17: Decorative Accessories, the sculptural candle is set to star across the interiors market this season. A handcrafted yet minimalist aesthetic characterizes designs, freed of all unnecessary details to focus on geometric and graphic forms that make a statement without being overly ornamental.
Following the trend for refined simplicity, both high-street retailers and independent craftspeople are starting to branch out, experimenting with shapes, colours and surface treatments.
One of our favourite picks (which also exemplifies the current trend for brands and designers moving into new ventures) is potter Helen Levi’s candle collection, cast from original hand-thrown ceramic pieces. Totemic and stacked geometric volumes combine with a natural beeswax yellow tone for an affordable luxury gift.
At high street level, Zara Home is revisiting classics, offering old-school candle holder shapes made entirely out of wax.
Textures and reliefs also play a big role, decorating the rims and surfaces of standard pillar shapes.
