Why the flared sleeve is everywhere this summer
By Carlene Thomas Bailey

A clean, minimalist aesthetic that is perfect for warm temps, no wonder the flared sleeve is a summer retail hit.

Flared trousers are nothing new, they roll around every few seasons influenced by the ever loved 70s disco decade. So, in fashion circles, you expect the rise and fall and rise again of the flared trouser leg. But this season the sleeve is replacing the trouser leg. This summer the flared sleeve top and dress is becoming a firm retail hit.

“We first saw this trend emerging last summer, and we’ve been tracking it to see how it’s evolving. The key influencer for this trend is the Australian womenswear label Ellery, and last years 70’s inspired catwalks. This statement sleeve shape  trickled down from the runway to inspire the high street looks that are making a huge retail impact right now. We’re also seeing the trend evolve and take centre stage in an endless stream of directional fashion editorials, that offer a playful and unique take on the oversized flared sleeve trend,’ says WGSN Womenswear editor Laura Yiannakou.

The benefits of the flared sleeved top are endless, the oversized fit makes it perfect for summer, keeping the wearer cool (read: no sweat patches) and it’s a look that you can rock from day to night, as it looks incredibly fashion forward but is actually effortless to wear. It’s become a high street hit this summer, with wallet-friendly brands such as &Other Stories, Zara, Mango and H&M, while those with more to spend can look to Elizabeth and James and Misha Nonoo.
