My obsession with silver boots started very innocently, like most obsessions it began small and then just grew.
Eighteen long weeks ago, I was just casually browsing through my Topshop App and spotted these beauties; BETTY Silver.
They didn’t have my size in stock, but that’s ok I could wait – until payday. I spent that whole time constantly lusting over them online, while trying to get opinions from friends and my boyfriend (who I won’t be asking again because according to him, “they looked like space boots.” What does he know?!)
I also got a few mixed reviews from girlfriends, “wow they are bright and attention seeking” – yes I know! I want them, was my reply.
Then payday arrived and so did the repetitive strain injury from refreshing my Topshop App waiting desperately for my size (7 FYI) to be back in stock and ready for me to purchase and wear that weekend with my all black denim and leather combo.
But they weren’t in stock, only sizes 3 and 4 were there, and no other Topshop store surrounding me had any in their store. I dashed up to the Oxford Circus flagship store and harassed their sales team to find out when they would be getting their next size 7s in, they didn’t know, and said it could be two months. Two months?!
So, I waited but they never came back in stock, and now they don’t even feature on their website.
How it did happen?
How did I find, covet and miss the boat on such magical footwear? Simple. In that time, 18 weeks, silver boots went from slightly odd, to the must-have shoe of the moment.
“In the first three months of the year, metallic boot new-ins grew 25.5% YOY – holding a 2.6% colour mix vs 2.1% in 2015,” says WGSN INstock Editor, Jessica Fioriti. “Metallic tones hold longevity to transition throughout seasons – ankle boot options offer transitional appeal and greater wear. ”
Call it the ‘Bowie’ effect, or the fact that boots are getting more affordable, and less of a ‘investment purchase’ making them easy to snap up on my debit card without making too much of a dent. Now silver boots dominate the high street, a pair popped up on my Instagram account via Office Shoes just this morning,
and these &OtherStories ones sold out almost as quickly as I spotted them.
“Metallic is definitely the colour of season when it comes to footwear in Europe”, said WGSN Editor of Footwear & Accessories Dan Bisson, confirming my thoughts. “It’s not just the standard gold and silver metallics that we are seeing either, it’s also coloured metallics too, like sky blue and scarlet red. The street style images that we’ve been taking across Europe since the start of the year, show that metallics are dominating, especially on the pavements outside fashion week shoes, particularly this Gucci style.”
So, now all I can do is keeping an eye on eBay, and shed a tear when I see all these bloggers rocking their version of silver ankle boots on the high street.
I am still holding out for my BETTY Silver Topshop ones though. If you see any store selling these in a size 7, contact me immediately!
