Commencing this weekend as part of Frieze Art Fair in London, renowned experts working across the fields of science, art, science, literature and architecture will congregate at the Serpentine Gallery as part of the 7th edition of the annual Memory Marathon.
Held in the Serpentine Pavilion, and marking its post-summer closing, a rich program of performance, discussion, music and art will experiment with, and uncover, the concept of memory in the digital age. The pavilion was designed by renowned Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, and Chinese artist Ai Weiwei this year.
Either attending specific events or the weekend as a whole, “visitors will discover the impact an increasingly digitized world has on memory, and experience first-hand the powerful links between memory and the senses,” explains the Serpentine Gallery on their website.
Participants and guests to the three-day event include musical maestro Brian Eno, surrealist master David Lynch, artists Gilbert & George, scent expert Sissel Tolaas and American writer Douglas Coupland to name a handful. A five hour-long performance by Lebanese artist Tarek Atoui will start the weekend’s proceedings, and for those who are unable to attend, a four-hour snippet of the event will be broadcast live via the online arts platform, The Space.
“A stunning array of world-leading experts exploring the subject of memory through the prism of art, history, science and technology, considering – among many other things – the suspicion that there is a kind of systematic forgetting at the core of the information age,” adds Hans Ulrich Obrist, Co-Director of the Serpentine Gallery.
The Design Museum in London recently explored the meaning of memory in the digital age in an experimental collaboration with crystal brand Swarovski and a handful of up and coming contemporary designers. You can see our coverage of the exhibition here. – Samantha Fox
