At the WGSN HQ’s globally, there is always a lot of talk about the fashion icons who inspire us, in fact our womenswear editor Robbie even runs a section of the main subscriber site called Icons (check it out here). Icon is a huge word, it goes beyond small achievements, it generally signifies someone who literally thinks differently, out of the box, disruptive, with childlike wonder etc.
A few of the same names often come up: Anna Wintour, for her impact in the world of fashion and publishing, but more recently with the release of books by French Vogue editor Joan Juliet Buck (you should definitely read her memoir The Price of Illusion if you can), and The Battle of Versailles by Robin Givhan (a must read) these women have been added to my icon list. I am also obsessed with esteemed fashion editor Teri Agins, the notable journalist with over 30 years of reporting for the Wall Street Journal. Then of course there are the groundbreaking models from Naomi to Kate, and more recently my faves Lineisy Montero and Dilone (#BlackGirlMagic).
From a design perspective, our Youth editor Marian is obsessed with Albert Elbaz and Clare Waight Keller, and Robbie our womenswear editor is fascinated with groundbreaking model Pat Cleveland (subscribers can check out his report here). Then there’s Cassandra Napoli on our team who loves Laura Brown (EIC of Instyle) who she insists but mainly just hopes, is her spirit animal.
But that’s just us, and we want to hear from you, who are the people in fashion who make you swoon, whose designs cover your Pinterest mood board, whose fashion reviews you cut out of the paper and stick on your wall, whose first editorial campaign you have as your screensaver etc?
