Championing the 24 most innovative textile design graduates from colleges and universities across the UK, TexSelect (formally Texprint), runs a program to support and mentor young designers as they move from education to the commercial world.
Last week, WGSN headed down to the first exhibition of this year’s graduates at Chelsea College of Art, London. Invested in nurturing future talent, WGSN is a foundation sponsor of TexSelect. In fact, this year sees the launch of the WGSN TexSelect Textiles of the Future Award, which will be given to three designers for their innovative approach to design.
Helen Palmer, Director of Materials, Textiles and Knitwear at WGSN says, “Our new award, the WGSN TexSelect Textiles of the Future Award, is all about demonstrating future thinking around social responsibility. It’s a critical message for the industry, and one which textile designers are perfectly placed to influence”.
One of the many highlights from the show were Cassie MacDonald’s playful prints. Her super expressive collection draws inspiration from folk art and costume, perfectly suited for kidswear and interiors alike.
For the first time six students from Glasgow were selected as TexSelect graduates, an ode to the high level of innovation coming from the course. Eve Campbell, MJ McKasiarz, Erin McQuarrie, Alice Percy-Raine, Catherine Sinclair and Claudia Veneroni exhibited outstanding work that explored material, surface, pattern and colour innovation.
Livia Papiernik is the first ever graduate from the Royal School of Needlework to be chosen for TexSelect. Using needlework as a method of storytelling, Livia’s collection of sublime hand-embroidery and embellishments aims to challenge traditional views of embroidery.
Alongside the new WGSN Textiles of the Future Award, TexSelect awards prizes for colour, interiors, fashion and pattern. Industry support also sees the Woolmark Company, Marks & Spencer and The Worshipful Company of Woolmen offer awards to chosen TexSelect graduates. With the award shortlists announced, winners will be revealed at Premiere Vision Designs, Paris on 20thSeptember, where the designers have the chance to showcase their work to an international market.
