At WGSN we’ve been tracking how consumer habits are changing. Yes, consumers still want those big, stand out gifts and in particular, Instagram-worthy experiences. But we’re also seeing the growth of unique gifts from independent boutiques and cool start-ups, unusual or unexpected gifts that also look good on the ‘gram. As a result, online spaces like Trouva and Buy Me Once are thriving. Trouva is an online platform for independent boutiques, which marked its first birthday in September last year with 50% month-on-month growth. While Buy Me Once encourages consumers to buy unique products that last. Consumers are also looking to make an impact with their spending power, using their wallet as their vote. That can mean supporting a local Christmas market or investing in products that help the environment.
So we got to thinking at WGSN Insider about changing consumer habits and offering readers a gift guide with a difference. This year our gift guide will be focused on cool new brands with values around altruism, sustainability, kindness, and stand out/unique designs.
WGSN Alternative Holiday Gift Guide 2017 Day One: The Children of Stars Travel Accessories
If you are looking for accessories that feel beautiful and give back, then get to know The Children of Stars. The travel accessories specialise in passport covers and luggage tags (for Millennials on the go) with 25% of the profit from sales going to refugees via @theworldwidetribe. Set up as a response to the refugee crises and the rising global divisions, two ladies Nadine Wild Palmer and Sian Tomlinson, founded this design project based around the key idea that we all shine #BrighterTogether. The product is made from recycled leather that would otherwise have been discarded, and after the leather is coated and grained in the UK, the passport holders are then cut, stitched and printed in South Wales. The idea is that you take a little more love on the go, and remember that we’re all children of the stars no matter where we are.
