Wellness hubs are moving away from the traditional spa experience of set, structured menus to a new offering of immersive experiences combining mind and body. WGSN’s Becky Stevenson took a trip back to her hometown of Stamford to check out one of the latest hubs on our beauty watch list.
Stamford, Lincolnshire, is not somewhere that typically comes to mind when thinking of wellness escapes. This, however, has all changed with the opening of RÖ’s second outpost, just off Stamford high street. The Scandinavian-inspired space, nestled in-between sleepy shops and pubs, was designed by London-based O’Sullivan Skoufoglou Architects, and the design specifics themselves are all part of the 360-degree wellness experience. A minimal wall lined with Honest products greets visitors and, once firmly inside, you’re surrounded by soft, peach hues, whilst ash display units line the edge of the shop, maintaining its original features. The space evokes feelings of a traditional apothecary filled with medicinal pots and potions.
The menu combines more traditional beauty treatments (massages, waxing, nails) alongside cutting-edge services such as body sculpting and holistic therapies. I opted for an Environ Vitamin Facial, which focuses on Vitamin A – known for properties that help with acne scarring, hydrating skin and de-clogging pores. First, Vitamin treatment gels are applied to the skin which are then activated using an electrical device that pulses your skin, this is followed by a creamy mask and then finally a neck and arm massage whilst the oils and cleansers get to work.
The RÖ experience is one that puts focus on a journey – the team got to know my current regime, carried out a deep analysis of my skin under lights and microscopes before finding the best treatment for me.
The wellness trend itself has taken many forms over recent years, but where is it going next? We believe the focus will shift to transformative journeys full of experiences aimed to enrich yourself. The wellness retreat of the future will be less about massages, and more about the self – and ensuring a deeply personal, tailored experience.
