We love this beautiful short film, commissioned by the UK Crafts Council, which brings a pottery zoetrope to life.

Created by collective RAMP Ceramics and animator Jim Le Fevre, the zoetrope—when in motion—depicts birds as they take flight from a forest.

To make the zoetrope, Roops and Al Johnstone of RAMP designed and handshaped a simple pottery bowl out of clay, and enlisted digital artist, Le Fevre to choreograph and paint the outer surface, similar to that of an animation strip, before firing the bowl in a kiln. The animation was then brought to life by videographer Mike Patterson, who filmed the bowl as it rotated over a potters wheel.

Watch the video above to see the zoetrope in action, and if you’re a subscriber to Stylesight, you can read our recent consumer report on The Maker Community to see more examples of contemporary designers and artists favoring DIY techniques of all kinds. – Samantha Fox
