Sunglass Hut is getting in on the Black Friday action and the charitable spirit of the season with an exclusive 150-piece collection of Ray-Ban Wayfarers hand-painted by artist Maya Hayuk as part of their Artist Series. The Brooklyn-based artist is known for her irreverent portrayals of social rituals and vibrant spectral graphics that have come to define the borough’s street style. Hayuk is no stranger to high-profile projects, having worked with an impressive roster of local musicians, such as Animal Collective, TV on the Radio, Devendra Banhart, Prefuse 73 and The Beastie Boys. For the Ray-Ban collaboration, she drew inspiration from a unique blend of resources—holograms, chandeliers, satellite imaging, Mexican woven blankets and Ukranian Easter eggs– to translate the iconic frame for a new generation of consumers.
New York’s SoHo store will put 50 pairs of the sunglasses up for sale on November 27, and San Francisco’s store will follow suit on “Cyber Monday”, with the remaining third going on http://www.sunglasshut.com/. To promote the in-store sales, Hayuk will create live window installations that will then be auctioned off, along with 50% of the sunglass sales, to support Luxottica’s charity, OneSight, which is dedicated to providing vision health and education to those in need worldwide.
