Wallpaper* Designer of the Year 2013: Ron Gilad

At the latest Wallpaper* Design Awards, Ron Gilad was honored as the Designer of the Year for 2013.

As an artist, I’m never satisfied with the end result; I don’t accept it. As a designer, I am not satisfied with simply creating another object in 3-D. I think about the right proportions, beauty and functionality as parts of a process which is the effect of a project, not its goal. Both as an artist and as a designer, I do not address the issue of a product’s or object’s potential for success (in terms of sales).” – Ron Gilad to Domus

It’s been an eventful year for this Israeli-born designer, with many pieces presented at the most important trade shows and galleries all over the world.

Among his recent work, the Grado° Collection for Molteni&C especially, as well as the exhibition The Line, The Arch, The Circle & The Square at Dilmos gallery in Milan, embody his clean aesthetics and predilection for geometrical shapes.

Moreover, Gilad’s latest designs were just presented at Maison & Objet this January 2013. In collaboration with traditional manufacturer Fujisato Woodcraft, he developed the Iwado Chest for Japan Creative. The pieces are devoid of any frills, focusing instead just on the materials, the tradition, and the craftmanship involved.

It is indeed his conceptual style, where function is protagonist and materials such as marble or metal are unburdened of their weight, leaving airy, linear volumes to play the role of furniture pieces, that make Ron Gilad a Stylesight favorite.  – Gemma Riberti
