We’re frequently told that virtual reality will make an impact on fashion but the tech and fashion industries are still trying to work out how. Now US Vogue is giving us its vision of what can be done in a deal with Google’s Daydream for an entertainment series called Supermodel Closets.
Vogue and Condé Nast Entertainment have worked with the tech giant to mark Vogue’s key September issue and also its 125th anniversary.
And it’s interesting that while Vogue is full of some of the world’s most expensive fashion (as is the average supermodel closet), that Google Daydream is among the most affordable most populist of VR offerings at the moment.
So what are the details? Well, this is one of the first projects to use Google’s newest Jump camera, the Yi Halo, offering 4K images and 360 degree views. Google made the point that filming in a closet shows how the cameras can offer great views in tight spaces.
While it has to be said that the average supermodel closet is probably larger than some people’s individual apartments, we’re not sure how well this fact illustrates Yi Halo’s features. But it does make the point that VR isn’t just for recreating wide open spaces.
The shoots took around two hours but have been cut down to four minute quick-looks.
The launch episode focuses on two of Kendall Jenner’s closets with one stuffed full of clothes, shoes and accessories, while the other is more of a dressing room.
It has a charmingly (or annoyingly) unpolished edge and we learn that her favourite boots are a pair that Kanye West gave her, and that she wore the same dress to her 21st birthday party as Paris Hilton did.
There will be five episodes, with Cindy Crawford also on the list. They can be viewed on a regular screen, although they don’t work perfectly that way. To get the full value, viewers need a Google Pixel phone, the Daydream View VR headset or Google Cardboard – its ultra-low-cost option that can convert a smartphone into a VR viewer.
