London: Blanket coats, tartans, and asymmetrically draped dresses. Vivienne Westwood returned to many of her past hits for her fall collection for Red Label. Upside-down cardigans and jauntily tailored pieces provided the off-kilter/ladylike element that has characterized her work for decades. Speaking of decades, the 1980s was one that Westwood turned to often in her current offering. Graphic zebra stripes, poofy party dresses, and metallics all spoke of the era. The designer also brought back the surrealist kabuki makeup that she has used in seasons past, whitening the models’ faces, slapping pops of turquoise and bright red on their eyes and lips, and highlighting it all with thick black lines. Though there was a lot of looking back in terms of design, Westwood’s signatures never seem to go out of style, so an asymmetrical dress or a shrunken tartan jacket look just as good in 2013 as they ever did in 1983. –Joanna Manganaro
