LADIES OF THE AGES
Paris: Vivienne Westwood seemed to conjure centuries’ worth of female characters this season. Opening with a tomboyish 20s look, things moved quickly though the centuries — 1700s cloaked damsels, 1940s powersuits, flashy 80s club kids, and jeweled princesses. The asymmetrical drapery and haphazard slouch was all there, along with a variety of playfully mixed plaids and colorful collage prints. Some things, like ruffle sleeve ballgowns, felt more like chintzy costumes than clothes, but a series of ultra-fine knits that slightly resembled sleepwear, had just as much wearability as quirk. —Anna Jane Davis
