Vivienne Westwood

Milan: Political statements are not always easy to communicate through a fashion show, but if anyone can try, it’s Vivienne Westwood. This year her cause célèbre is global warming, specifically the disappearance of the polar ice caps, a serious matter which translated into a particularly saleable collection for the designer. North Pole-ready fur collar coats, quilted bombers, corduroy suiting and patchwork longjohns were cozy staples for F/W 12, but pleated tapered trousers created an unflattering silhouette. Other key items included oversize intarsia knit cardigans, draped blanket coats and plaid suiting, all playing against type and leaving behind the punk themes of Westwood’s past for a more outdoorsy, grown-up look.—Nina Stotler
