Anyone who has been to France in late August/early September knows about the fever surrounding “La Rentrée.” Whether it’s boutiques peddling new fall fashions or pharmacies selling pills that promise to “make your summer tan last through the rentrée,” the hazy, relaxed pace of summer suddenly shifts into a euphoric country-wide celebration of the beginning of fall. Much like the September issue is the most significant for fashion magazines [and an important month for students of all ages heading back to the classroom], La Rentrée is an opportunity for reinvention, a time to touch base with friends and family finally back in town, and, well, a decent excuse to go shopping for some serious fall fashion. And for us here at the Vault, a decent excuse to go inspiration-hunting at the stalls along the banks of the Seine! After the typically flimsy summer fashions and over-thigh-exposure one is inundated with in NYC from may-august, celebrating the womanly, demure 50s-inspired styles popular on the runway for fall seemed only appropriate. We’ve also included some late 40s-era illustrations as a nod to Katherine Hepburn’s menswear-inspired influence, because what could be more authoritative than brown jodhpurs? Maybe knee-high spats and a rifle…
