Christie’s London will begin a series of 20th century couture auctions late November, encompassing a wide range of iconic designers largely from the 1920s-1990s. The first auction is slated for 29 November, and the goods up for the block comprise a veritable fantasy wardrobe that would send any vintage lover or mere fashion fan swooning (heart palpitations and sweaty palms sure to follow). Strikingly contemporary 20s day dresses by Jeanne Lanvin (part of an extensive Lanvin lot from the collection of Spanish film star Càtalina Bàrcena), a particularly lovely, graphic 30s gown attributed to Dior for Lucien Lelong, a 50s-era Dior ‘New Look’ wedding gown, a soft 70s-does-30s Ossie Clark & Celia Birtwell set and even beaded mid-90s corset tops by the late Gianni Versace constitute a singular timeline of innovative design from 20th century masters. Below, a series of our favorite pieces up for grabs [if you’re looking for somewhere to spend that rare extra pocket change] and for those looking for another research book to add to the library, the catalogue is a more wallet-friendly way to appreciate the auction’s bounty. Stay tuned for future auction-related posts as we’ll be reviewing the selection as it becomes available.
