New York: Victoria Beckham is one of the very few celebrities who have managed to earn the approval of serious fashion followers. (Perhaps Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen of The Row are the only other stars to have achieved this feat.) Beckham won over the establishment with her sophisticated yet sexy dresses, but her label has evolved to include many other desirable items. For fall, the designer set her sights on outerwear. The charcoal grey and pale blue checked coats that opened the show were a highlight, and later sleeveless versions were also a hit. Glossy haircalf panels that appeared on the coats and on other items added a luxurious touch. Beckham also played with silhouette this season, using on-trend rounded sleeves and dropped shoulder seams for boxy tops, turtlenecks, and body-hugging sheaths. This season’s broadened range of items and new shapes solidified the label’s relevance and demonstrated Beckham’s commitment to moving her brand forward. –Joanna Manganaro
