Versace Couture Fall/Winter 2012

Paris: This season’s couture collection was an emotional experience for Donatella Versace. It was the first time she had presented a collection at the Ritz, where her late brother Gianni staged his couture shows for eight years. Not only was the collection a return in location, it was also a return to classic Versace themes – over-the-top embellishments, shine, Medusa motifs, and thigh-baring slits. Unabashedly sexy short dresses were made from panels of laser-cut leather, metal mesh, and printed silks whipped together with stitches that looked like sutures. Coats were a highlight. The first version (and the collection’s opening look) was made from strips of patent leather with gold buckles, and another style was a glimmering bronze shade. The gowns were either long and slim, hugging the line of the body, or fitted to the hip and erupting in sheer ruffles as they floated to the floor. This very-Versace collection is sure to have made Gianni proud. –Joanna Manganaro
