Paris: Veronique Branquinho kicked off the S/S 13 season in Paris with an ode to the statuette, draping her models in luminous gold column dresses that seemed nearly liquid. Equal parts Oscar award and Greek goddess, these nude-toned gowns embellished with burnished beading and fringe were the high point of the presentation, but seemed very much at odds with several utilitarian jumpsuits and ill-fitting pantsuits. Nautical stripes were also a strange addition, but thankfully gave way to crisp white shirting cinched with upper arm cuff bracelets and classic pleated sheaths hung from quirky suspender straps. Uneven and curiously paced, Branquinho’s collection was ultimately redeemed by the strength of monochrome looks in lean silhouettes. —Nina Stotler
