Paris: Belgian designer Veronique Branquinho is known for her serious, avant-garde collections, so it was quite a surprise when she sent cowboy hats and western boots down her runway for fall. Silk bandanas and bronze studs complimented the countrified references. However, aside from a couple of camp shirts and the aforementioned studded separates, the clothing itself had little to do with the cowgirl-inspired elements. Controlled and minimal, it consisted mostly of slim midi skirts, easy trousers, and second-skin turtlenecks. Coats were a highlight, appearing in a variety of textural materials, such as curly fur, brushed wool, tweed, and leopard-printed pelts. The palette was mostly neutral, with warm beige, chocolate brown, and black as its main components, but pops of lemon yellow and bright green livened things up. Some of Branquinho’s items, such as a citron lamé skirt seemed to have been included expressly as a contrast to the rural references, making the mix of country- and city-inspired items all the more intriguing. –Joanna Manganaro
