NEW YORK COOL
New York: Vera Wang, a proud New Yorker, often tries to capture the city’s edge in her ready-to-wear collections. While those attempts have sometimes given her work a sort of forced aggression, this season’s offering had a perfect balance of femininity and toughness. Leather pieces were softened with tufts of fur, and black shorts featured attached sheer pants as an underlayer. Black thigh-highs gave looks a schoolgirl innocence. Draped satin pieces – in particular, a stunning white gown worn with her signature chunky costume jewelry – reminded viewers why she is the most powerful bridal designer in the business, while layered cardigans were proof that she can translate her appeal into classic, everyday pieces. In a palette of mostly black with cool neutrals, Wang captured the essence of New York sophistication.
