ALL ABOUT OPULENCE
New York: Vera Wang knows how to make a piece for a special occasion. Her bridal gowns, of course, are spectacular. She usually incorporates similar embellishments in her ready-to-wear collection in a subtle way, but this season she went all out. The fabrics – metallic jacquards, fox fur, satin, taffeta – were ultra-luxe on their own, but Wang added beading, jewel embellishments, fabric appliqués, and fur panels, for an unabashedly opulent look. Rich tones of amethyst, bronze, garnet, and pearl supported the feeling of richness. Wang suggested that the pieces could be worn for either day or evening, and with some creative styling, she might be right. But each garment was so special, it would seem wrong to waste it on an average day in the office. With holiday cocktail parties currently in full swing, Wang’s clients probably wish these show-stopping pieces were in stores now. The formality of the looks was notable, given the collection’s late-summer delivery, but Wang’s followers always have a special event at which they need to look fabulous.–Joanna Manganaro
