As summer draws to a close and students are swapping beach blankets for textbooks, there are back-to-school updates and inspirations on the runway and street. The most iconic and long-lasting, has been the presence of the varsity jacket. It seems that when Alexander Wang sent his re-interpretation of this classic jacket down the runaway in his S/S10 collection the cool kids sat up and took note. From high fashion to fast fashion here are some key coats that are marching towards victory in the stadium of style.
Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of New York label, Proenza Schoeler reinterpreted the varsity jacket in their F/W10 collection, mixing fur with wool, leathers and striped ribbed collars to create pieces with a contrasting mixture of texture and scale. There was even a cropped tuxedo adaptation that had us drooling for days.
Opening Ceremony collaborated with Chloe Sevigny to create black “silkie” baseball version, in addition to their private label interpretation which featured ruffles on the shoulders. Lanvin also took an unconventional approach, reversing the traditional fabrics and mixing a destressed leather body with woolen sleeves and raw edges.

Nike Sportswear designers have also been re-crafting the traditional varsity jacket, focusing on blending high tech materials with functional active-wear, and on a more mainstream affordable level, Urban Outfiitters has a fresh crop of coats on the floor at this very moment.
