Paris: Since taking over for The Last Emperor, Pier Paolo Piccoli and Maria Grazia Chiuri have had the daunting task of re-invigorating Valentino with new energy while staying true to the house’s feminine aesthetic. This season’s couture collection hit all the marks with a good deal of success – innocent (and almost austere) styling belied a strong thread of subversiveness throughout the collection, emphasized by barely-there sheer fabrics and sensuous pleating. It may not be a revolutionary road the co-designers are heading down, but the quiet elegance of the clothes feels right for the moment.
