DELICATE + DEMURE
Paris: Since they took the reins at Valentino in 2009, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli have pushed the boundaries. They introduced neon, techy fabrics and studs, as well as a new youthfulness that reenergized the label. But for spring, the designers returned to the essence of the house with a collection filled with delicate, feminine looks and accented with signature Valentino red. Shirtdresses were shown in a variety of styles, some with sweet contrast collars and others with twee bibs. Broderie anglaise, organza and several types of lace supported the theme of classic femininity. Though Chiuri and Piccioli didn’t throw any curveballs or do anything irreverent (the closest they got was a smattering of snakeskin and a handful of studs), it was a collection that one supposes Valentino the man would approve of. The beautiful garments they presented will appeal to followers of the label, past and present. –Joanna Manganaro
