New York: Andy Warhol’s portraits served as a reference for Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli’s resort collection for Valentino. The punchy tones that the artist used were translated onto the clothing, and the effect was as compelling as one of the artist’s paintings. Lime green, magenta, and lemony yellows made the collection feel lively and optimistic. Chiuri and Piccioli borrowed shapes from Warhol’s heyday, the 1960s and 70s. Boxy double-breasted jackets evoked the former decade, while filmy blouses and sexy leopard prints were a nod to the latter. The designers didn’t hesitate to include the unique take on femininity that has come to define their tenure at Valentino. Lace and bow appliqués, peplums and kitten heels were among the sweet elements. The smart mix of everyday pieces, cocktail looks and eveningwear will please the label’s hip clients, offering them something for every occasion. –Joanna Manganaro
