Paris: Youthful femininity has summed up the efforts of Valentino designers Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri for the past few seasons, but for Pre-Fall the label took a bolder approach by choosing a saturated, bright palette in place of pastels and nudes. Concentrating on classic Valentino red and a vibrant coral, the collection hinged on leather skater skirts, strapless jumpsuits and rich velvet tuxedo jackets, in addition to the expected party frocks and satin gowns. In fact, the colorful monochromatic ensembles, such as a motorcycle jacket and matching miniskirt, seemed downright edgy for the conservative brand, as did a molded brocade skirt suit with a Balenciaga silhouette. —Nina Stotler
