With a staggering 1,000 submissions, this year’s V&A Illustrations Awards were recently announced, crowning five talented illustrators with prestigious awards.
The annual awards ceremony, held at the museum, celebrates the best illustrations published over the last year. This year’s judging panel consisted of artist/designer Lady Dyson, lighting designer Patrick Woodroffe, artist Lucy Woodroffe, editor of Stylist magazine Lisa Smosarski, and V&A Director of Design Moira Gemmill.
After much deliberation they chose the following winners, presenting each with a trophy and £2,000, with the Student Runner-up receiving £1,000.
Editorial Illustration Award & Overall Winner: George Butler
Book Cover Illustration Award Winner: Pietari Posti
Book Illustration Award Winner: Anna and Elena Balbusso
Student Illustration of the Year: Grace Helmer
Student Runner-Up: Minho Kwon
Established in 1972, the V&A Illustrations Awards have become increasingly popular, with entrees doubling since 2010. Previous winners include Quentin Blake, Ralph Steadman and Michael Foreman.
