US Open of Tennis Kickoff: Serena Williams at Niketown NYC

It’s that time again folks! The US Open of Tennis has officially kicked off and Active Team couldn’t be more excited. In fact, we’re headed to the tournament this coming Thursday for an “underneath the lights” match!

To get things warmed up, Nike invited us to an event with tennis pro Serena Williams last Friday on August 26th at its flagship Niketown store on 57th Street in New York City. Williams hosted the event in front of kids from the New York Junior Tennis League, MS 35 and City Parks Foundation, as well as hundreds of fans and shoppers who happened to luck out for a sighting of this tennis icon.

Williams was interviewed by Terrence J from BET’s show 106th and Park, about getting back on the courts for the US Open, her passion for the game and, most importantly — speaking directly to the kids — about staying confident in the path towards success on and off the court.

We have to admit  though, our absolute favorite part of the event, was the unveiling of Williams’ kit from Nike, complete with both her day and nighttime looks for the tournament, as well as accessories and footwear. The goods were given to her in a sleek black box and we were lucky enough to snag a quick close-up photo after the event.

Williams day look is the Scarlet Fire Smash Hard Court Dress with accents at the shoulder and Godet pleats in black for a dramatic contrast. Her evening look is an identical dress in shape and silhouette, but in a deep treasure blue, complete with Williams’ Mirabella kicks and Max Air cushioning. So, in a full circle from head-to-toe, day-to-night, her looks represent the American athlete she is in a palette of red, white and blue. (Why does Nike have to just kill it all the time?!)
