New York: Richard Chai’s main message this season was layering–shirts under sweaters under jackets under coats under jackets. This layering of flannel plaid shirts, relaxed anoraks, puffa jackets, parkas and slouched trousers created a grunge-like effect that still remained neat. Although the layering is on point, Chai’s collection is less eclectic than the urban nomad trend, sticking with the New York City streets as his locale. Muted awning stripes, mixed plaids and a brooding palette exuded a downtown aesthetic with a grown-up grunge guy dressing for cold city winters. This theme put outerwear in the forefront with fur-collar parkas, quilted bomber jackets and patterned trench coats. Chai’s suit of choice this season was a casual 6DB suit complete with a slim jacket and relaxed trousers. – Matt Feniger
