Paris’ Musée Galliera’s upcoming Hors-des-Murs exhibition will focus on the model’s role in the fashion industry, with nearly 120 photographic prints accompanied by videos, fashion magazines, and other related ephemera spanning the entire 20th century to feature at Les Docks- Cité de la Mode et du Design from 16 February to 19 May 2013. “Models’ Bodies: The Crux of Fashion” (or Mannequin: Le Corps de la Mode) originally showed at the Rencontres d’Arles in 2012; its success demanded a repeat-spin in the city of lights as the Musée Galliera prepares for its imminent (and long-awaited) re-opening following 4+ years of renovations in Fall 2013. Following the excellent Hors-des-Murs exhibitions on Madame Grès, Balenciaga and Commes des Garçons, this latest in the series is a departure from the usual apparel-focused exhibits, examining the countless models underneath the clothes throughout time. Curated by Sylvie Lécallier, the press release notes: “From the anonymous model to the cover girl, from the clothes horse to the sex symbol, from the supermodel to the girl next door: ambivalence is all in the sheer mass of photographs devoted to the model’s commercial, aesthetic, and human worth, and the stereotypes she represents.”
Discover a history of fashion from the point of view of the model (not to mention some of the 20th century’s most accomplished photographers) from mid-February to mid-May.
Models Bodies: The Crux of Fashion, Les Docks- Cité de la Mode et du Design, 34 Quai d’Austerlitz 75013. Open Tuesday – Sunday 10am – 6pm.
