Shang Xia, meaning “up, down,” is a Chinese-designed luxury label brought to you by the Hermès group.
Founded with the practices of traditional Chinese tea ceremonies in mind, creative director Jiang Qiong-er’s designs for women, men and interiors represent a unity between European luxury and Asian artistry. Materials such as Zitan, Bamboo, Cashmere, Porcelain, and Jade are central to the finely crafted collections. Shang Xia’s first retail outpost was opened in Shanghai’s upscale shopping center, Hong Kong Plaza. Japanese architect Kengo Kuma designed the sublime space to resemble “a soft cave,” a concept that was realized by lining the walls and ceiling with porous, 3D polyester forms. Kuma’s intent was for visitors to curiously stroll the rooms like a Chinese garden, which is especially enticing when accompanied by a complimentary cup of Shang Xia’s house blend tea. -Christina Mannatt
