Paris…Gareth Pugh

Following the example of Viktor & Rolf’s S/S 09 collection presented in video form, Pugh put together a reel using a singular model, Natasa Vojnovic.  With music from The Shining sounding off in the background, viewers were drawn to the presentation in a slightly different way from his more futuristic collections of the past. Before the video began, he said, “this is not from a spaceship, it’s from under the ground. I wanted it to feel earthy.” Colors were derived from elements found in the earth like, coal, minerals and metals. Dresses draped in a A-line shape, high-waisted wide leg pants and broad shoulders on dresses looked dark yet grounded.

Here we are again with minerals from within the earth- a very intriguing concept when it comes to color and the iridescence of fabrics. This collection has grasped me- a favorite thus far and a sign the Paris is still pushing black. Pugh’s concept seems a ‘tad’ futuristic but to a certain extent where fantasy is not allowed as has been the case in his past collections. Simply captivating.
