If you’re traveling in Europe or the U.S., chances are there’s a local chapter of Underground Rebel Bingo nearby. What’s that, you ask? Exactly what it sounds like: an underground bingo club, where the only rules are no work suits (insane attire is strongly encouraged) and no cameras.
Besides that, anything goes at these alcohol-fueled events that are more like raves than typical bingo nights. At URB drawing on your friends with the markers you’re supposed to be using on your bingo card is not only acceptable, but the norm and prizes range from giant stuffed pandas to 25 cupcakes.
Underground Rebel Bingo began in a British church basement back in 2008, when James Gordon (URB name: James Flames) and childhood friend Freddie Sorensen (URB name: Freddie Fortune) discovered an unused bingo kit and threw an event based around it, blasting dance music and showering the crowd with glitter. The response was instant, and the party quickly grew to include URB nights in Madrid, New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Montreal, San Diego and Las Vegas, all hosted by the dynamic duo.
If you’re in the L.A. area this Friday, Underground Rebel Bingo is taking over an undisclosed location in Sliver Lake; you must purchase tickets to know where the event is taking place and to attend. So grab an adventuresome friend or two, get ready to draw all over each other and don’t be shy about calling out “BINGO,” but take warning: those who shout bingo and make it to the stage only to have been mistaken are not only booed by the crowd, but escorted off the stage to the haunting strains of Beck’s “Loser.” Ouch.
