Ulyana Sergeenko Couture Fall/Winter 2012

Paris: Everyone knows Ulyana Sergeenko can put herself together well. She is a constant presence on street style blogs and is a regular attendee of the shows in Milan and Paris, with her fashionable Russian friends Elena Perminova and Miroslava Duma in tow. Her current couture collection, however, is her first major outing as a designer, and some of the biggest names in fashion came out to see if this street style darling could translate her magic into runway-ready looks. The answer – sort of. Her most successful looks, unsurprisingly, borrowed items, which she has become known to wear herself – slim-fitting sweaters and full, ankle- or calf-length skirts. Military coats (some with medal-studded sashes), babushkas, and bits of furs were all nods to her Russian heritage, but they seemed too obvious. A pair of textured nude bloomers was an odd fit. Sergeenko did cut a striking white blazer (part of a pantsuit), which showed skill, and a black lace dress was delicate and feminine. Though there were promising elements in the collection, Sergeenko would do well to think more globally for her next go-round. –Joanna Manganaro
