It’s the one coat that is likely found in every wardrobe, the classic perennial item, outerwear armour to get through transitional temperatures. But recently we’ve witnessed trench coats be elevated from a spring/early autumn staple to a seasonless trend piece. Yes, trench coats are never far from the fashion spotlight but the focus on seasonless dressing has seen them rise from spring essentials to year-round buys with broad appeal.
“Although the coat category overall fell 1pp YOY, the trench represents a low-risk buy and rises 3pp YOY to hold 9% of the new-in coat mix in September,” explained Francesca Muston, WGSN Head of Retail and Product Analysis.
Luxury retailers including Nordstrom, Net-a-porter, Nordstrom Rack and Bloomingdales showed the highest numbers of new-in trench coats for September although this market is declining as the percentage priced over $200 has decreased from 68% to 56%.
“The interesting shift is in the value market where the share of new-in trench coats in September grew from 2% to 17%, driven by H&M and Forever 21 as the item gains traction with the fast-fashion customer,” added Muston.
Trench updates for S/S 17 include lightweight, longer line silhouettes as a 49% YOY increase was noted across the recent New York catwalk shows.
