New York: Very seldom does a celebrity line get any respect from the fashion industry, but Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s label, The Row, has quietly beat the odds for three years now. The secret to the line’s success may be that it is fashionably inconspicuous, offering clothes and accessories that the designers might actually wear themselves. The FW2010 show featured ultra-luxurious pieces, like a python dress, as well as elements that reflect a taste for drama, such as voluminous wrap coats and never-ending leather gloves that reached up and showed through the sleeves of a sheer blouse. But a nearly colorless palette and flat sandals suggested that being showy is not one of the twins’ objectives. An item not usually associated with low-key looks, the corset, made more than one appearance as a layering piece. Styled over simple floor-length dresses, it created a silhouette that managed to be both body-con and breezy. The Row seems to be a collection for a customer with the same needs as the Olsens: a desire to express oneself through fashion, yet still manage to walk down the street anonymously.
