New York: Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen looked to vintage photographs of fishermen when gathering inspiration for their Cruise/Resort collection. Hooded nylon anoraks, ribbed turtlenecks, and floppy leather hats all seemed to have been derived from their research. The designers happily did not allow their inspiration to take priority, however. Instead, it seemed the main focus was on the minimalist, sophisticated separates for which the label has become known. Pants were a big story, appearing in slouchy, pleated styles and cropped, wide-leg versions. As usual, the Olsens did not shy from luxurious materials, including patent leather, fur, and cashmere. Top-handle bags were paired with several looks, and one couldn’t help but wonder about their price tags, considering a leather backpack from a recent collection was selling for about as much as a new Mercedes. Price aside, the label’s maturity and sophistication continues to impress, and this confident collection is proof that their CFDA win was well-deserved. –Joanna Manganaro
