New York: Rather than a runway show or presentation, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen opted to show their new collection for The Row by private appointment – a fitting venue given its more refined sensibility and jaw-dropping luxury. This was not your grandma’s fox fur coat or wool wear-to-work sheath, however, as the twins infused the collection with their forward taste level (informed by labels like Balenciaga and Céline) and a bit of youthful street cred with bursts of mustard, sky blue and leopard prints. Relaxed trousers, boxy yet slim blazers and mannish slippers from their collaboration with TOMS Shoes gave the more opulent items like Jazz Age frocks and crocodile separates an offbeat glam reminiscent of Lanvin. It will be interesting to see if the same clientele who were drawn to the young designers’ must-have basics will respond to their new-found lavishness.
