New York: It is safe to say the twin sisters behind The Row have officially shed their “child star” reputations and become serious heavy hitters in the fashion industry. Again, the designers brought a cutting elegance to New York Fashion Week – a refined sensibility befitting of the Upper East Side home that staged the collection, yet one forward and relaxed enough for the denizens of hip several blocks south. The pair started with the stately figures of the Edwardian period, clad in their smart frock coats, starched button-ups and fancy jabots. Then seeped in the Japanese influences from their past few collections in the form of kimono-based wrapped blazers and low-slung obis. Finished off with fanciful ruffled kitten heels, the combination of slightly off proportions, mannish tailoring and stacked silhouettes was not unlike Celine’s Spring collection. However, the Olsens have an edge on the streetwear angle; ratty thermal onesies and slouchy cable-knit sweaters brought just enough irreverent charm to win over the cool kids.—Nivara Xaykao
