Keeping consistent with his spring collection, Alber Elbaz delivered feminine luxury for F/W 09. “I thought with my heart about what women need from fashion—dresses, suits, blouses, coats. Life isn’t just parties and lunches,” he said. In a palette of mostly black, strapless dresses were draped to the side, creating a cascading asymmetrical flounce. Sequins and crystal-embellished shifts recalling ‘40s styles were paired with a fur-lapelled sleeveless blazer belted at the natural waist. Adding a bit of sparkle, floral-embossed glittered velvet satin appeared on skirts and tops in steel grey, navy and oxidized gold. The accessories remained simple yet intriguing; feathered headwear, extra-large gemmed necklaces, full-length gloves and black heels reflected a distinctly French aesthetic. Pulling together a sensible collection he said, “people keep trying to divide designers into optimists and pessimists, but me—I’m a realist.”
