New branding, a new part-owner (can we give a shout out to Jay-Z!), an incredible state-of-the-art arena, and a roster full of fresh talent (and some familiar names) bring forth the new Brooklyn Nets. In a move from New Jersey to Brooklyn this year, the “new” Nets are the biggest news within the NBA for its 2012/2013 season.
On Sunday, November 25th, the Active Team had the chance to finally check out a game. With all of the hype and amazing product being released around the team, it was exciting to see the arena first hand and watch the guys play from just a few rows off the hardwood. (We loved our seats!) Barclays Center sits at 620 Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn and first opened to the public on September 21, 2012 through a series of concerts hosted by Nets part owner Jay-Z. The building was designed in the shape of three articulated bands including a glass wall and latticework of weathered steel to represent Brooklyn’s brownstones. Through its design, the structure seems to pull fans into the very center, mingling and looking up, even right before tip-off. This inviting set up, partnered with the court itself located below street-level, allows for high visibility of the internal scoreboard from the plaza.
Brooklyn’s hometown team has sparked multiple campaigns, bringing forth a new sense of great pride for the borough. Through sports chants, rivalries and slogans including, “Brooklyn now has a home team.” and “Bridges will be crossed.” the team has established its own identity, and a strong one at that!
In addition to classic jerseys, tees and caps, sports giant adidas (and sponsor of the NBA) released a special collection of Nets gear under its popular adidas originals name that features unique crew-neck sweatshirts and sport jackets. Adding to the hype, adidas also worked with well-known sneaker shop KITH on a capsule collection comprised of a wool peacoat, leather duffle, t-shirt and custom USB drive.

We are stoked to see the team settling into its new home and can’t wait to watch the franchise grow in New York City. Tune in tonight to see the Nets face off against the New York Knicks for the first time in the Battle of the Boroughs at 7pm EST. With both teams coming off wins, it should be the perfect game to start off the rivalry the right way!
